The Serenity Sessions
Calming music for a stressful world
This is a new creative venture for me. My musical focus has been all over the map: songwriting, singing, playing guitar, improv, etc. There's nothing wrong with that, but I realized it was time to reconnect with my first instrument, the piano, and my first musical loves. So I revisited my favorite Bach, Mozart, Debussy, Satie and Gershwin pieces, as well as Carole King’s “Tapestry” and Simon & Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water”.
At the same time, I read in a music industry newsletter that today's most popular playlists are, by far, ones around relaxation & calming. It didn't surprise me at all. We live in a stressful world. So many of us struggle with anxiety, have a hard time falling asleep, or just want to relax and unwind.
These two elements combined to inspire the writing and recording of this group of songs. I've always improvised at home as a way to self-comfort and get centered. So I experimented with those improvisations, newly inspired by revisiting my first musical loves. I refined them, added a few other instruments, and shaped them into these songs.
As I worked on them, I lit a candle, took deep breaths, and tried to still the chatter in my mind. I hope you can do the same when you listen to them.
