Improv Karaoke is a two cd set especially designed for people who want to learn how to do song improv. Disc 1 starts with a general tutorial that gives an overview of song improv, with lots of tips and pointers. Then you’ll hear a demo version of each track, improvised by people like Keegan-Michael Key, Dan Castellaneta and Kathy Kinney, based on suggestions they’ve gotten on the spot.

Disc 2 has all the same tracks, but without any talking or demos. It’s just like karaoke, except you get to make up your own, original songs, on the fly. This is your chance to jump in and give song improv a try!

As seasoned veterans of the entertainment industry, Kelly Macleod, Laura Hall and Rick Hall have delivered a heartfelt album that is the culmination of their combined past experiences, passions and joys. From Laura's front porch as a young woman to Kelly's back yard as a little girl their songs will make you smile, but it might be through a few tears.

Kelly Macleod (vocals, guitar, writer) took to the road with Eddie Van Halen and her band “Private Life” after being discovered in Shreveport, LA. Laura Hall (vocals, guitar, writer, accordion, ukulele) best known as the pianist on "Whose Line is it Anyway,” also played with Chicago musicians Michael Smith, Buddy Mondlock, and Tim Grimm. Rick Hall (vocals, bass, harmonica) accompanies Kelly and his wife Laura. Rick has multiple television and film credits that include NCIS and K.C. Undercover. Together the three fuse their talents to form the unique and fresh sound.

“Headin’ Home” has a familiarity with the opening track’s a capella harmonization in “Those Pines” The imagery in the album takes the listener on a road trip of nostalgia. We find ourselves navigating across acoustic love ballads such as “Without You” and twangy upbeat gospel pieces like “Down to the River.” The Sweet Potatoes have successfully taken their life's stories and created a relatable Americana record straight from the heart.

My musical focus has been all over the map: songwriting, singing, playing guitar, improv, etc. There's nothing wrong with that, but I realized it was time to reconnect with my first instrument, the piano, and my first musical loves. So I revisited my favorite Bach, Mozart,

Calming music for a stressful world

This is a new creative venture for me. My musical focus has been all over the map: songwriting, singing, playing guitar, improv, etc. There's nothing wrong with that, but I realized it was time to reconnect with my first instrument, the piano, and my first musical loves. So I revisited my favorite Bach, Mozart, Debussy, Satie and Gershwin pieces, as well as Carole King’s “Tapestry” and Simon & Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water”.

At the same time, I read an article saying that today's most popular playlists are, by far, ones around relaxation & calming. It didn't surprise me at all. We live in a stressful world. So many of us struggle with anxiety, have a hard time falling asleep, or just want to relax and unwind.

These two elements combined to inspire the writing and recording of this group of songs. I've always improvised at home as a way to self-comfort and get centered. So I experimented with those improvisations, newly inspired by revisiting my first musical loves. I refined them, added a few other instruments, and shaped them into these songs.

As I worked on them, I lit a candle, took deep breaths, and tried to still the chatter in my mind. I hope you can do the same when you listen to them.

Produced by Nashville favorite, Phil Swann, the band is joined in the studio by guests that include David Carpenter (Billy Ray Cyrus, Julian Lennon) and Laura Hall's bandmate from her “day job” as the pianist on “Whose Line is it Anyway”, Linda Taylor (Maia Sharp, Crystal Bowersox).

Original songs by band members Laura Hall and Kelly Macleod include “Sweet Thing”, a back porch style ode to love, and “You Kissed Me That Way”, a driving ballad about the power of that first kiss. The CD title comes from their bluegrass infused tune about the joys of rural living, “Spunky Bottoms”. The band also does a bluesy take on Patsy Cline's “Walkin' After Midnight”, and a delicately dark acoustic version of The Eurthymics “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)”.

Kelly Macleod and Laura Hall have been friends for a long time, but started making music together after Kelly starred in SLICE OF PIE, a film written by Laura's husband, Rick Hall. The collaboration on the film soon led the two singer/songwriters to write what would become their new self titled cd. The songs are filled with their experiences in life...finding and appreciating love, having faith, raising children, childhood memories and the places where these memories took place. The material is heartfelt, rooted in the family ties that made them the women they are today. Produced by one of Nashville’s favorites, Phil Swann, the cd features the guitar work of Linda Taylor (Laura's band mate from Whose Line is it Anyway), and a host of other talented musicians.

Kelly Macleod has recorded two albums with Warner Brothers records, which were produced by Eddie Van Halen. She was the lead singer in the band PRIVATE LIFE, and was the opening act for Van Halen’s OU812 Tour. Two of her songs have been featured in the movies WAYNES WORLD and GREMLINS 2.
