Whose Line is it Anyway: The Longest Running Gig Ever

Whose Line Is it Anyway has been not only the best gig I've ever had, but also the longest running, and in all sorts of different variations.  First we did 8 years of the TV show for ABC. Then I went out on the road with Drew Carey and the Improv Allstars for several years doing live shows all around the US and Canada, and even a USO tour in the Middle East. Then the TV show came back on the CW network, and we're in our third year with Aisha Tyler as our new host.

Now we're going to London this summer to do a live run of the show at the Adelphi Theatre with a combination of the American and British casts.  This is so thrilling to me!  To play a big, beautiful theatre in the West End with so much history.  I'm so excited and honored to be part of this theatre tradition.  It's "bucket list" exciting.

I got to perform at Carnegie Hall with The Improv Allstars a few years back, which had a similar sense of history and excitement.  I played the same piano that Glen Gould, Vladimir Horowitz, Art Tatum and Dave Brubeck had played.  In honor of the venue we improvised a mini opera, and in the middle it struck me how funny it was to be improvising an opera in this revered venue where so many legit classical pianists and real opera singers had performed real opera arias. My career has constantly surprised me!

There's a story I love that’s attributed to the famous pianist Arthur Rubenstein and violinist Jascha Heifetz, who toured together as a duo in the early 1900’s.  The story goes that at one performance Heifetz lost his place in the music, and Rubenstein decided to see what would happen. Rubenstein improvised along with Heifetz rather than giving him a cue to help him get back on track.  Finally, the violinist leaned over and whispered "Where are we?", to which the pianist replied "Carnegie Hall, of course".

What am I doing wrong? I couldn't get any of the Sampler tracks to play.... until I got down to 'Why Won't You Do It My Way?' 'Not me', I decided.
